On inland waters chemistry of indian ocean islands seychelles comores reunion mauritius

Cahiers OO.M.-(Office-de-la-Recherche-Scientifique-et-Technique-Outre-Mer)-Serie-Hydrobiologie. 11(4): 297-320

The stages of surface weathering on younger volcanic islands are variable, depending on the climate and widespread effects of deforestation. The rocks are partially porous, causing subterraneous water-drains; ions may increase. The hydrochemistry of rivers from old volcanic islands is similar to that from crystalline (granitic) watersheds, especially the headwaters, which are surface drains for acidic soils. They are poor in ions, but are Na+ and Cl- enriched. Conductivity usually increases downstream.
