On the expansion and origin of carassius auratus in czechoslovakia

On the expansion and origin of carassius auratus in czechoslovakia
In 1962 and 1964, C. auratus (Linnaeus, 1758) occurred in 2 different river drainage areas in Slovakia. In 1968-1970, some other isolated findings were made but since 1972 the number of localities with this species increased and its mass occurrence was found in many places. At present, C. auratus occurs in nearly all important river drainage areas in Slovakia with the exception of the Poprad and Slana rivers. It also occurs in Moravia. The occurrence of this species in the Danube River basin is briefly commented on; the invasion of C. auratus into Slovakian and Moravian streams has its origin in Hungary where it was introduced in the drainage area of the Koeroes River (the catchment area of the Tisza River) in 1954. From this river it penetrated rapidly the whole catchment area of the Tisza River and of the central part of the Danube River. There evidently are several forms of C. auratus in the catchment area of the Danube River; it is even probable that this name involves a complex of several species.
