On the growth of thickness of cranial bones in human fetuses

On the growth of thickness of cranial bones in human fetuses

The developmental changes of the cranial bone thickness in the fetal period are described. Japanese fetuses (56) ranging in age from the 4th mo. to term were studied. All of them were secured in a fresh condition and preserved in a 10% formalin solution for several years. They were first externally measured, i.e., the crown-rump length, head length, head breadth and head circumference were determined. After the measurements the heads were carefully dissected and the left side of individual bones of cranium were removed to take further measurements of the arc length. The thicknesses at the ossification center were in general successively measured with the micrometer, readable to 0.01 mm. The results were investigated from the viewpoint of absolute growth and relative growth. By allometry analysis, vertical and transverse arc lengths were found to be isometric with 2 exceptions, while all the measurements of the thickness were extremely positive in allometry, i.e., more than 2. This corresponds to the results of the fetal dry bone series by Ohtsuki. Some tentative considerations regarding this point are presented.
