On the heredity of hair color in haflinger horse

, : On the heredity of hair color in haflinger horse. Archiv fuer Tierzucht 30(1): 55-62

The breeders of Haflinger horses in the GDR direct their efforts towards pure-breeding of bays (deep golden colour) with white long hair (mane and tail) as the ideal Haflinger type. However, it is not yet exactly known how these traits are inherited. The authors elucidate the reasons for this shortcoming and discuss the international theories on this topic as well as possibilities for advancements in this field. At least seven loci must be considered. Furthermore, they make a proposal on the heredity of long hair colour, suggesting three loci to be responsible for the heredity of white, red, grey, whitish-red and whitish-grey long hair.
