Ophthalmic solutions and corneal endothelium

Ophthalmic solutions and corneal endothelium

Folia Ophthalmologica Japonica 35(10): 1849-1852

The effects of various ophthalmic solutions such as gentacin, rinderon, timolol, befunolol, divivalyl epinephrine, epista and indomethacin on the rabbit corneal endothelium were examined morphologically. These drugs caused various degrees of degeneration of the endothelium. Endothelial degeneration was classified into 4 types: wavy change at the anterior chamber side, enlargement of intercellular space, slight movement toward small defect, movement toward large defect. It was very difficult to detect changes 1 and 2 with the specular microscope.
