Pathogenesis of mycoplasma gallisepticum infection in the reproductive and respiratory tracts of chickens in vivo and in vitro studies

The pathogenesis of M. gallisepticum infection in the reproductive and respiratory systems of hormone [stilbestrol dipropionate] and non-hormone-treated chickens was studied. The chicks of both groups developed characteristic lesions of mycoplasmal salpingitis (encapsulated lymphoid follicles in oviduct). The lesions in hormone-treated chicks developed earlier (at 12 days post-inoculation (DIP)) than in untreated chicks (at 28 DPI). The lesions in the respiratory system were similar in all aspects in both groups. The organisms were re-isolated and identified by epi-immunofluorescence. The (immunofluorescent) antigen of M. gallisepticum was demonstrated with immunofluorescent antibody (IA) in oviducts, lungs, tracheas and air-sacs. The in vitro pathogenicity studies conducted in tracheal organ cultures revealed a slowing of ciliary activity followed by ciliostasis at 4 DPI, nuclear swelling, cytoplasmic vacuolization and patchy loss of cilia from lining epithelial cells. The antigen of M. gallisepticum was demonstrated with IA in the lining epithelium of tracheal explants.
