Peniophora pithya new record found in spitsbergen sweden
P. pithya (Pers.) J. Erikss. (Corticiaceae) is reported for the 1st time from Svalbard [Sweden]. It was found in 1975 at Ossian Sarsfjellet (79.degree. N) about 10 km east of Ny-Alesund, Vestspitsbergen. The fungus was growing on an old planed board (of Picea abies). This locality is the northernmost in the world. Wood-inhabiting fungi are rare in Svalbard since trees and bushes are lacking. The ecology and distribution of P. pithya is discussed.
