Abstract
The field experiment conducted during summer of 1981 and 1982, to study the performance of maize and cowpea as either sole or intercrop revealed that intercropping of these two crops in 1:1 proportion is not beneficial. Intercrop maize showed increased rate of dry matter accumulation. Intercropping showed no effect on chemical composition of the foliage of either crops and also failed to improve leaf protein productivity due to the lower yields of cowpea. Further experiments on intercropping systems of these crops with different ratios have been suggested.
