Stylosanthes guianensis cultivars Schofield and Endeavour, Desmodium uncinatum cv. Silverleaf, Centrocema pubescens, Lotononis bainesii cv. Miles, Trifolium semipilosum cv. Safari, Medicago sativa cv. Hunter river and Lablab purpureus cv. Dolichos were grown with Chloris gayana cv. Pioneer (Rhodes grass) under 2 levels of clipping intensities. Dry matter yield was analyzed in relation to the prevailing temperature conditions in the southern parts of southwestern Islands of Japan. Cultivars Schofield, Endeavour, Centrocema and Lotononis had higher increased dry matter production and outyielded annual dry matter of other legume-Rhodes grass combinations. Cultivars Schofield, Endeavour, Centrocema increased dry matter production at .apprx. 27.degree. C, Lotononis and Silverleaf, at .apprx. 22.degree. C. Apparently, Schofield, Endeavour and Centrocema are suitable for growing in the area. The bunch type of the creeping type of legume, such as cultivars Schofield, Endeavour and Lotonosis, is more lasting in the mixture receiving higher clipping intensities compared with the climbing type of legume such as Centrocema.
