Ph and distribution of digestive enzymes in alimentary canal and salivary glands of spilostethus macilentus stal lygaeidae heteroptera

Hydrogen-ion concentration and distribution of various digestive enzymes have been studied in various parts of alimentary canal and salivary gland of adult S. macilentus. The pH ranges near to neutrality in all parts. It is slightly alkaline in midgut third and fourth, pH of host plant tissue has no effect on the pH of alimentary canal and salivary gland. Enzyme invertase is present in high concentration in all the parts of the mid-gut and salivary gland. Maltase, .alpha.-galatcosidase and amylase are found to be present either weak, very weak or in traces. .beta.-galactosidase is found in traces mid-gut first only. Proteinase and lipase are found to be very weak. Polypeptidase, esterase and cellulase are completely absence in all parts of guts and salivary gland. Starvation had no effect on the distribution of various enzymes.
