Phagocytosis of the retinal pigment epithelium 4. selectivity of phagocytosis and microvilli of retinal pigment epithelium

To clarify the phagocytotic selectivity of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), 3 kinds of polystyrene spheres, already proved to have different susceptibilities to phagocytosis by the RPE, were injected into the subretinal spaces of albino rats; the phagocytotic behavior of the RPE microvilli were then observed by scanning EM. The microvilli evidently changed their morphological appearance according to the physico-chemical nature of the phagocytized material, which was the morphological finding of selective phagocytosis.
