Dimethylamine was nitrosated photochemically in an aqueous solution containing nitrite by irradiation with a high-pressure Hg lamp and by exposure to sunlight, giving nitrosodimethylamine, a well known carcinogen. The nitrosation occurred more readily at alkaline pH than at acidic and neutral pH. Nitrosodiethylamine was produced photochemically under natural environmental conditions.
