Photosynthesis of lettuce 2. results with butterhead lettuce cos lettuce and iceberg lettuce lactuca sativa cultivars

Photosynthesis of lettuce 2. results with butterhead lettuce cos lettuce and iceberg lettuce lactuca sativa cultivars

Mededelingen Landbouwhogeschool Wageningen 81(13): 1-19

The response of photosynthesis to irradiance of whole lettuce shoots was measured in an open system at 22.degree. C and a CO2 concentration of 570 mg/m3. The gross photochemical efficiency per plant (.alpha.g) and per unit leaf area .**GRAPHIC**. the maximal net photosynthesis per plant (Pm,n) and per unit leaf area (Plm,n), the dark respiration per unit leaf weight (Rd) and the light compensation point (Ic) were calculated by curve-fitting. The stomatal (rs) and residual resistances (rm) and the specific leaf weight (SLW) were calculated on the basis of total leaf area (A). A multilinear regression of .alpha.g with soil cover, leaf area and leaf weight gave a good fit for all experiments and for each separate plant characteristic the soil cover gaven the best correlation with .alpha.g. Measurements at the irradiance level of growth showed no difference between the photosynthetic rates at .alpha.g-basis of the cultivars. Results of the analysis of Pm,n per unit soil cover were identical to those of Pm,n per .alpha.g. The influence of irradiance on Ic is more pronounced than that of cultivar. A period with low irradiance resulted in a high rm. SLW is mainly influenced by cultivation conditions (irradiance) and then correlated with rm, while those SLW-differences caused by cultivars are almost not correlated with rm. The 2 cos lettuce cultivars gave different results, while the 2 iceberg genotypes always gave similar results. Cos and iceberg lettuce seemed less adapted for growth in winter. Selection on higher yield of butterhead lettuce with the use of parameters describing the photosynthetic process seems hardly useful, certainly when photosynthesis is measured at circumstances identical to those during growth.
