Photosynthesis of lettuce lactuca sativa 1. results with cultivar amanda plus

In 2 experiments photosynthesis of whole lettuce shoots was measured in a closed system. During cultivation in both experiments 4 treatments of different irradiances and temperatures were applied to obtain plants with different habitus. The response of photosynthesis to irradiance (I) was measured for palnts of 3 ages at 14 and 26.degree. C. In the 2nd experiment response of photosynthesis to CO2 concentration (C) was measured at 15 and 25.degree. C. The basis, effective leaf area (EL), is equal to soil cover (S), leaf area (A) and leaf weight (W) and to the gross photochemical efficiency (.alpha.g), since EL = .alpha.g .cntdot. .**GRAPHIC**. with .alpha.g,con as the constant value of .alpha.g when all light quanta are absorbed. A multilinear regression model of .alpha.g with S, A and W gave high correlation coefficients, while addition of the profile area did not improve the model significantly. The gross photochemical efficiency per plant (.alpha.g) and per unit leaf area .**GRAPHIC**. the maximal gross and net photosynthesis (Pm,g and Pm,n) per plant and per unit leaf area .**GRAPHIC**. the dark respiration (Rd) per unit leaf weight and the light compensation point (Ic) were calculated by curve-fitting. In a 3-way analysis of variance, some of these parameters, the net photosynthetic rates on .alpha.g-basis at 35 and 100 Wm-2 and at light saturation, Ic and the corrected Ic (= Ic .cntdot. .alpha.g) were analyzed. The values of .**GRAPHIC**. and .**GRAPHIC**. decreased with increasing age. The .**GRAPHIC**. value was not affected by treatment and measurement temperatures. The photosynthetic rates on .alpha.g-basis gave only lower values for the group of young plants. The effect of treatment on Pn diminished at 35 Wm-2, but increased at 100 Wm-2 and became more distinct at the saturated level of irradiance. The corrected Pn at 35 Wm-2 is higher at 14 than at 26.degree. C. This difference disappeared at 100 Wm-2 and at saturating I the Pm,n was higher at 26 and at 14.degree. C. Ic is strongly influenced by measurement temperature. Corrected Ic-values were affected by age and not by treatment. In the 2nd experiment the net conductance for CO2 per plant (.tau.n) and per unit leaf area .**GRAPHIC**. the Pm,n and .**GRAPHIC**. and the CO2 compensation concentration (Cc) were calculated. An increase in measurement temperature decreased .tau.n and .**GRAPHIC**. but affected the maximum photosynthetic rates positively. Cc depends strongly on temperature during measurement.
