Photosynthetic and growth characteristics in manganese chloride treated tradescantia albiflora plants

In Tradescantia albiflora L. plants grown for 6 weeks in nutrient solution with 100 to 800 .mu.M MnCl2 both the photosynthetic CO2 uptake (PN) and respiratory CO2 release (RD) were decreased in comparison to control plants, while the CO2 compensation concentration increased. The PN/RD ratio was lower in MnCl2 treated plants than in the control except for 200 .mu.M MnCl2. Growth in general was retarded in MnCl2 treated plants, except for 200 .mu.M MnCl2, at which leaf production and leaf expansion were enhanced significantly. Stomatal behaviour and leaf water content were not influenced by MnCl2.
