The BR570 .fwdarw. K610 and K610 .fwdarw. BR570 photoreactions were studied under picosecond excitation deuterated bacteriorhodopsin (from Halobacterium halobium) at 13.degree. K. The rates of direct and back reaction were unequal. The reverse reaction is much faster than the forward one. The BR570 .fwdarw. K610 and K610 .fwdarw. BR570 phototransitions may be characterized by different reaction paths.
