Endogenous reductants in Anacystis are photooxidized in a P750-sensitized reaction. These reductants do not serve as electron donors to photosystem I, nor are they oxidized in simpler chlorophyll-sensitized reactions. There are indications that excitation of both P750 and chlorophyll causes formation of singlet oxygen, but that chlorophyll-sensitized oxidations via the 1O2 mechanism are inhibited in Anacystis by the quenching effect of .beta.-carotene.
