A high percentage of diapause and nondiapause larvae of the pink bollworm, P. gossypiella (Saunders) that were buried in soil moved upward to the soil surface or to within 1.3 cm of it. Larvae released on the soil surface usually pupated at a depth of 0-1.3 cm within 48-72 h. Most larvae (approximately 60-98%) buried with 7.6 cm of soil, 24 h or more after entering the soil, pupated at depths of 5-10.2 cm. Burying the pupae under as little as 2.5 cm of soil reduced moth emergence 95% or more.
