Abstract
A review of the Red Book of the Turkmen SSR which contains a listing of protected plant species revealed that some plant species from the Turkmen SSR which did not need protection were included in the book while other species requiring protection were not included. Exclusion from the Red Book was proposed for 12 spp. which were not endangered either because their populations had not decreased through the years or because of the remoteness of their habitat or because the species were reported in error for the Turkmen SSR. Out of 30 spp. proposed for inclusion some species were in danger of extinction because their habitats were in the vicinity of populated areas; other species were sought as food or for breeding of drought-resistant, frost resistant or otherwise desirable food or fodder species. Some plants were rare endemic species of limited habitats deserving protection. Listings of species proposed for exclusion and inclusion in the Red Book are provided.
