Plasma prealbumin in low birth weight infants

Plasma prealbumin in low birth weight infants

Acta Paediatrica Belgica 30(3): 171-174

In pre-term infants plasma prealbumin levels at birth increased with fetal age. The plasma prealbumin value of full-term infants is about half the value of male adult controls. Only 1 out of 9 small-for-date newborn infants has a plasma prealbumin level below the normal range. Postnatally, prealbumin in the low birthweight infants attains full-term values within 3 wk of age. Total parenteral nutrition increased plasma prealbumin in pre-term infants. [Plasma prealbumin is a sensitive index of the nutritional status in children suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition.].
