Plasticity of neo striatal metabolic activity and behavioral recovery from nigro striatal injury

Damage to the mesotelencephalic dopaminergic projection [in rats] results in an impairment of somatosensory localization and a depression of [14C] 2-deoxy-D-glucose uptake in the neostriatum, nucleus accumbens septi, olfactory tubercle and central amygdaloid nucleus. Animals that do not recover from this sensorimotor disorder show persistent decreases in the uptake of this glucose analog by these forebrain regions. In animals that recover the metabolic activity of the neostriatum and central amygdaloid nucleus is normalized, indicating the involvement of these structures in the recovery process.
