Meristem virus-free potato tubers with Phytophthora resistance gene R1 and 2 races of P. infestans once of which was compatible with this potato cultivar and the other was incompatible, were used in the experiment. The experimental data on the effect of various factors (mechanical damage, biologically active metabolites of the causal agent of late blight) on potato tuber cell ultrastructure indicate the extreme lability of the plastid apparatus which is manifested in the interconversion of various types of plastids. The varying type of plastid transformation in damaged and sensitized tissue may be due to the varying nature of biosynthesis in these tissues: formation of glycoalkaloids and phenol compounds in the damaged tissue and an increased potential for sesquiterpenoid phytoalexin synthesis in the sensitized tissue.
