Contradictory paleobathymetric indications result from an analysis of the faunal [including mollusk, foraminifera and ostracods] content of the Pliocene Var delta. An infralittoral fauna would be redeposited in a deeper.sbd.circalittoral and even bathyal.sbd.environment; as a result, the terrigenous sediments were deposited not in a delta, but in a deep submarine fan right from the mouth of the paleo-Var. As in the present time a very reduced continental shelf.sbd.i.e narrow or even missing.sbd.characterized the Pliocene continental margin.
