Abstract
A short account of the history of pollen morphology is followed by a description of its uses in plant taxonomy and phylogeny. New methods and research techniques, especially the use of the EM which reinforce the connections of palynology with other sciences (cytology, embryology, biochemistry) provide new objective criteria for the determination of the taxonomic position of different systematic units, and new phylogenetic links. Pollen grains reflect the structural and functional evolution of plants.
