The white-rot species Lenzites betulina (379) (L. ex Fr.) Fr. was tested to their ability to produce clearing zones on agar medium containing insoluble cellulose (Avicel, Whatmann-submitted to Walseth (1952) method or not) or to release the blue dye, from a cotton cellulose, what diffuses to the lower layer of medium. The carboxymethylcellulasic activity was tested against a soluble cellulose (CMC = carboxymethylcellulose) and the reducing sugars detected by reading at 525 mm the absorbance of solutions, obtained after 4 hours incubation of 10 ml of a 1% of CMC (in phosphate citrate buffer pH 3.5-7.5) with 2 ml of extracellular extracts from 8, 15, 22, 30 and 40 days old cultures growing in a liquid medium containing CMC (1%) as sole source of carbon. That activity was also tested by loss of viscosity of CMC (1%) using an Ostwald viscosimeter and the same extracellular extracts. CMC (0.1%) agar medium and the extracellular extracts or mycelia were tested and the clearing zones stained with Congo red and the contents on CMCase evaluated using a standard sample of CMCase of Trichoderma viride (Sigma). The protein contents in the extracellular extracts was also determined. The phenoloxidasic activity was tested by adding one of the nine phenolic compounds (cathecol, gallic acid, guaiacol, hydroquinone, naphtol, phloroglucinol, resorcinol, tannic acid and tyrosine) to the malt agar growth medium.
