Sedimentological research has for a long time now been faced with the problem of finding rock sequences that appear to be entirely homogeneous when examined either by maked-eye observation or by conventional microscope techniques and that are, in addition, poorly fossiliferous. A new attempt at subdividing sequences of this kind is developed by using a combination of sedimentological, paleontological and mathematic methods. The textural parameters and carbonate content of a 11.5 m section at Katymar, were studied by cluster analysis. The lithologic subdivisions were made by distinguishing subidentical lithofacies (formed in similar depositional conditions) belonging to the same cluster. The exposure was also subdivided faunistically. The results obtained by the 2 different methods were compared. The lithologic units yielded by the cluster analyses were in accordance with the faunistic units. The units defined in terms of the combined granulometric and faunistic results reflect changes in the contemporaneous depositional environment. [Using the notion of an accumulated environment and carrying out a classification of textural parameters provide an approach for isolating distinctive features in analyzing depositional environments. This procedure is useful even in poorly fossiliferous sedimentary sequences.].
