Post prandial changes in the levels of lipids glucose urea and nonprotein nitrogen in the serum of veal calves fed milk replacers containing either skim milk powder or soybean protein concentrate

Calves (aged .apprx. 7 wk; 5-6 animals/group) were fed liquid diets containing either skim milk powder of soybean protein concentrate for 14 wk. Growth rates tended to be higher in animals on the skim milk powder diet. At the end of the experimental period blood samples were taken just before, and .apprx. 3 h after feeding. The dietary protein source had no significant effect on the concentrations of glucose, urea, nonprotein N, triglycerides, cholesterol and phospholipids in fasting serum. Postprandial increases in the serum levels of nonprotein N, triglycerides, phospholipids and cholesterol were higher in the soybean protein group than in the skim milk group, the difference between diet groups in the latter 2 serum lipids being statistically significant. In the skim milk fed animals postprandial glucose levels tended to be higher than in animals on the soybean protein diet. In the animals on the milk replacer containing soybean protein, feeding induced a shift of cholesterol from the high density lipoprotein fraction into the low density lipoprotein fraction. At least part of the differences in postprandial levels of several serum components between calves fed liquid diets containing either skim milk powder or soybean protein are related to the fact that casein, in contrast to soybean protein, coagulates in the abomasum of the calf.
