Post puberal and senescent evolution of rat ovaries made dysgenesic by the pre natal action of misulban

Ovarian dysgenesis was induced in rats by destroying germinal cells during embryonic life by the injection of misulban in the pregnant mother rat. The females born to treated animals were sacrificed at 2-24 mo. and the ovaries prepared for histologic examination. Normal sources of ovarian hormones such as mammary glands, vaginal and uterine mucosa were also examined. Dysgenic ovaries were always smaller than normal at 2 mo. At puberty, dysgenetic ovaries responded to gonadotropic stimulation. Ovarian changes occur during the organization of follicles: the mesenchymatous tissue is differentiated in the manner of the circumfollicular theca. During development of the epithelial and connective tissue formations in the ovary, abnormal structures are observed, and the rupture at certain points of the basal membrane surrounding the epithelial formations. Examination of vaginal smears and histologic study of ovarian effectors revealed abnormal cycles. At 5 mo., hormonal conditions are difficult to interpret because of images of castration, keratinization and vaginal mucification. Subsequent response of effectors is more homogeneous. Prostate glands are sometimes discovered in dysgenetic females between 2-12 mo., suggesting a production of androgenic steroids. Later, uterine polyps, tumors of the mammary gland and sometimes generalized tumors are seen.
