Preliminary research on seeds and seedlings of pinus halepensis and pinus brutia and pinus eldarica

Preliminary research on seeds and seedlings of pinus halepensis and pinus brutia and pinus eldarica

Annali dell'Istituto Sperimentale per la Selvicoltura 9: 109-130

Some characters of seed and seedlings of 50 provenances of P. halepensis, P. brutia and P. eldarica from the Mediterranean region were studied. The characters were: weight of 1000 seeds, mean length and mean diameter of seed, residual germination power, number of cotyledons, mean length of hypocotyl, mean length of cotyledons, mean height of 1 yr seedlings, and mean increment of seedlings during the 2nd year. Strong correlations among the character of seed and of seedlings, and between the group of provenances of halepensis series and brutia series appeared. Very strong correlations between the character of young seedlings and those of older seedlings show the application of this research in identifying provenances with faster growth.
