Preoptico hypophyseal neuro secretory system in tropical air breathing fish notopterus chitala

Preoptico hypophyseal neuro secretory system in tropical air breathing fish notopterus chitala

Zeitschrift fuer Mikroskopisch-Anatomische Forschung (Leipzig) 98(2): 205-212

The preoptico-hypophyseal neurosecretory system in a tropical air breathing fish, N. chitala comprises the nucleus preopticus, their axonal tract and pars nervosa. The nucleus preopticus consists of 2 limbs, a vertical and a horizontal one. The cells of nucleus preopticus are differentiated into 2 groups, the pars parvocellularis and the pars magnocellularis. The neurosecretory material in the cells of nucleus preopticus is in the form of fine aldehyde fuchsin-positive granules. The disposition of neurosecretion is heaviest along the fibers of the neurohypophysis in the region of pars intermedia. The Herring bodies are noticeable at different levels in the neurohypophysis. The intra-axonal flow of neurosecretory material and the vascularization of the nucleus preopticus are also discussed.
