Light microscopic studies have been made of the preoptico-hypophyseal neurosecretory system (PHNS) in the descending larvae, small fry, yearlings and adult pink salmon O. gorbuscha. Progressive development of the system in ontogenesis was noted which is displayed in the increase of the number and size of neurosecretory cells, the size of neurohypophysis and the degree of arborization of its distal part. The system is highly active in the larvae and exhibits low activity in the fry. Definitive development of all the elements of PHNS is achieved already in the yearlings, in which neurosecretory cells of three functional states as well as typical Herring bodies in the neurohypophysis are found. The PHNS is depressed in specimens with a limited locomotor activity and food deficiency. Changes in the environmental conditions (salinity, chemical composition, etc.) evoke specific changes in the content of neurosecretory material in the neurohypophysis of the larvae indicating participation of their PHNS in adaptation to new environment.
