Preparation of helminthosporal by extraction with di ethyl ether from culture filtrates of helminthosporium sativum
Two preparative methods for the sesquiterpene helminthosporal, produced in liquid culture medium by H. sativum [cereal root rot and seedling blight pathogen] were compared: the classical procedure, using adsorption on charcoal and elution with chloroform, and a technique based on extraction of the sesquiterpene with diethyl ether. Properties of the substance extracted by diethyl ether are described; the toxic product thus obtained showed characteristic absorption spectrum of helminthosporal in the UV and IR region. The diethyl ether extraction technique represents an interesting preparative method of helminthosporal in terms of rapidity and yield.
