Ester and amides of N-(3-quinolinecarbonyl)-N-methyl-phenylglycine (4) cyclise under the influence of base to derivatives of pyrrolo-quinolines (6-9,11). Tetracyclic products (10) are formed in the reaction of 4 with ammonia.
