, : Preparation of radulae and penial styles for scanning electron microscopy using 0.5 normal quaternary ammonium hydroxide. Veliger 24(3): 279-280

A simple effective method is described for cleaning radulae using a commercial tissue solubilizer, Beckman BTS-450. Advantages are: the soft tissue clears quickly, revealing hard structures in situ; the volume loss from heating solubilizer even to 50.degree. C is nil and neither crusts nor precipitates are formed; timing is not critical, for results were the same after 4 h or 72 h and the radular teeth and basal ribbon remain intact; the dissociative action on tissues seems independent of original fixative and age of specimen, yet the most delicate surface sculpturing on teeth or styles is unaffected by time of exposure. Results are demonstrated with SEM [scanning electron micrograph] photos of Onchidoris dilamellata, Elysia chlorotica and Alderia modesta.
