Present status of the studies on the clay mineralogy of the soils of the cacao theobroma cacao region of bahia brazil

Revista Theobroma 15(1): 43-48

The present status of the studies on the clay mineralogy of some cartographic units of the Cacao Region of Bahia, Brazil, is summarized. Eleven of the 15 soil units showed advanced weathering, with dominance of 1:1 of minerals, kaolinite family. Montmorilonite/smectite and vermiculite predominate in the Itamirim (Mollisol) soil unit and were found in the Hydromorphic (Inceptisol) soil unit. Micas, attalpugite, interstratified minerals, gibsite, goetite and hematite were also noted.
