Primary plankton production in lake baikal ussr

, : Primary plankton production in lake baikal ussr. Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii 37(4): 517-524

The primary production of oligotrophic Lake Baikal [USSR] was determined Aug. 1975 using a modification of the radiocarbon method. For different areas, the daily primary production in the surface layer was 5.4-41.5 mg of C/m3 and 47-390 mg of C in the whole column of water/m2. The annual phytoplankton productivity calculated from the mean monthly values for the entire lake was 53 g of C/m2, or 558 kcal/m2. According to the chlorophyll a content, 0.5-6.5 mg/m3 (mean value 2.0 mg/m3), Lake Baikal approaches basins of the mesotrophic type. The photosynthetic activity of the phytoplankton expressed in daily assimilation values is 12.0 .+-. 5.1 mg of C/mg of chlorophyll a. It is especially low (7.4) for the phytoplankton of the southern part of the lake.
