Primary production and photosynthetic pigments of marine phyto plankton of ecuador
Surface phytoplankton production was estimated from chlorophyll a concentration and primary production was measured by the C-14 technique in Ecuadorian waters by researchers on the vessel Orion. Surface temperature and Secchi depths were used to describe hydrographic conditions of the euphotic zone. The warm tropical waters to the north contained less than 0.2 mg/m3 of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll ranged 0.6-2 mg/m3 in the south and west. Primary production ranged from 20-50 mgC/m3 per day in the dame areas. The highest values were found in patches of discolored water (red tide) in the Gulf of Guayaquil, where an actively photosynthesizing phyotoplankton crop of ciliates was found.
