Primary productivity of govindgarh lake

Studies on the primary productivity of Govindgarh lake, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh [India], were conducted from Jan. 1968 through Dec. 1969 by employing the light and dark bottle technique. This was supplemented with data on physico-chemical factors and plankton of the lake for the corresponding period. The primary productivity showed a definite seasonal trend, generally showing 2 peaks, one in Feb. and the other in July. Both net production and gross production exhibited a similar trend. The annual average gross production was 1.104 and 1.482 g C/m3 per day, respectively, in 1968 and 1969. The annual production of C in this lake was estimated as 4831 metric tons and 6467 metric tons, respectively, for the 2 yr. The productivity was significantly higher in the shallower zones of the lake than in the deeper zones. Productivity showed a direct relation to light intensity, whereas it did not show any direct correlation with temperature. In spite of the poor alkalinity, the photosynthetic yield was comparatively higher in this lake. Among the nutrient salts, nitrates showed a direct effect on productivity. There was a general correlation between the variations in the standing crop of plankton and productivity.
