Productivity of grain sorghum sorghum bicolor 1. nitrogen nutrition of grain sorghum

The growth pattern and N uptake in grain sorghum and the effect of N application on the productivity of grain sorghum were studied. Grain sorghum (S. bicolor (L.) Moench) hybrid H-726 was grown under different levels of N (17.5-440 ppm) in water culture. Plant fresh weight increased markedly with age up to the hard dough stage, although the growth rate was lowered temporarily during early grain filling. The N content in any plant part markedly decreased with aging, and it increased with increased N levels in mature plants. N uptake in the growth cycle followed a pattern similar to that of plant growth. Grain sorghum had 2 phases, requiring higher N when vegetative growth and grain development occurred rapidly. Plant growth and grain yield were highest at 44 ppm N application, while the amounts of total N in both plant and grain were obtained at levels of N above 44 ppm. Production efficiencies of grain yield and grain N shown by the percentages of grain yield to whole plant dry weight and of N content in grain to total N in the plant were maintained at comparatively high levels in the ranges of 17.5-88 ppm of N application, while they gradually decreased with increasing N over 88 ppm. Although the percentage of crude protein in grain markedly increased with increasing N application, other components such as crude fat were slightly affected. The optimum level of N application required for highest grain yield was much lower than for the highest percentage of crude protein and crude protein yield in grain.
