Prospects for utilization of ribes petiolare in selection of the black currant ribes nigrum

Prospects for utilization of ribes petiolare in selection of the black currant ribes nigrum

Latvijas Psr Zinatnu Akademijas Vestis (3): 116-123

Hybridization of R. petiolare with R. nigrum produced cultivars with more flowers and higher productivity. Factors limiting selection in F1 and F2 forms were the low gustatory qualities of fresh berries in most of the hybrids, self-sterility, low self-fertility and early shedding of fruit. For increased effectiveness in the selection of valuable recombinants, crossing R. petiolare with frost-resistant black currant cultivars (having a maximum expression of traits with respect to taste, self-fertility and strong attachment of berries in the bunch) and the creation of larger hybrid populations were essential. In F1 and F2 hybrids of R. nigrum X R. petiolare, forms with multiflowered clusters (25-50 flowers/cluster) and forms with highly expressed valuable properties of R. nigrum were isolated. The best forms were not suitable for direct use due to low gustatory qualities of the berries, but were recommended for use as technical varieties. The basic importance of all selected forms was their value as initial material for the creation of black currant cultivars of a new type.
