Tritium labeled prostaglandin F2.alpha. (3H-PGF2.alpha.) was infused: into superficial layer of the myometrium of the anaesthetized gilts, into superficial layer of myometrium of an isolated uterus of gilts, or was injected into uterine lumen of an isolated uterus of gilts and cows. Isolated uterus was supplied with autologous, oxygenated and heated (40.degree. C) blood. The results revealed that during the luteal phase 3H-PGF2.alpha. infused into myometrium or injected into the lumen and flowing out from the uterus with the venous blood and lymph, penetrated into arterial blood in the area of the broad ligament and was back transferred into the uterine horn. This process was 46-fold higher in the gilts vasculature, comparing to the cows. It was suggested, that the back-transfer mechanism might be able to reduce peak concentration during pulsative release of PGF2.alpha. from the gilts uterus and has protected the corpus luteum against luteolysis.
