Pure cropping and mixed cropping of maize and groundnuts in ghana

Studies were carried out on pure and mixed croppings of maize and groundnuts for 3 yr at Kwadaso in the forest zone and at Nyankpala in the guinea savanna zone. The yields of groundnuts in the mixed cropping treatments were 1/3-1/2 the yields obtained from the pure culture. The yield of maize was not reduced to the same extent. At Kwadaso, where there was a fungus infection (Sclerotium rolfsii) in 1969, the mixed cropping treatments, on the average, suffered less groundnut plant losses than the pure culture treatment. In an environment conducive to the spread of soil-borne disease, the return per hectare from the mixed cropping treatments was significantly higher than that from the pure cropping; otherwise, the return from the pure cropping was the same or slightly better. In the competition between the individual crops in mixed cropping, the groundnut plants were at a disadvantage, suggesting that pure cultures give better returns than mixed ones. Among the mixed cropping treatments, inter-row cropping appeared to be the best terms of yield. It was also more convenient to carry out cultural operations such as fertilizer application, spraying and weeding.
