Quantitative analysis of nerve fibers before and during myelination of the white matter in the human cervical spinal cord during its pre natal development

In the cervical segments of the spinal cords of human embryos and fetuses the thickness of unmyelinated fibers, promyelin and myelinated axons was measured in various parts of the developing white matter. Unmyelinated nerve fibers were very thin (mean 0.2-0.3 .mu.m). The occurrence of larger diameters was explained by the presence of a greater number of growth coni. Promyelin fibers were still without their myelin sheaths, but the periphery of axons were wrapped in oligodendrocyte processes. Axon diameter was much larger (about 0.8 .mu.m). Myelinated axons appeared first in propriospinal perigriseal pathways. Their mean thickness was 1 .mu.m, growing a little in older stages. In areas of advanced myelination there were more axons of larger diameters.
