Radiation pathomorphism of cancer of the lung rectum and breast in pre operative megavolt therapy

Histological and cytological preparations of lung, rectum and mammary tumors removed at various times following megavolt irradiation with application of conventional and major dose fractionation (260 observations on mammary carcinoma, 76 on rectum cancer and 87 on lung cancer) were studied. In conventional fractionation the cumulative dose of about 3500 rads induced dystrophic, necrotic and sclerotic changes in the tumors and, in a number of patients, resulted in complete resorption. Manifestations of the previous changes directly depended on the time elapsed between the withdrawal of irradiation and surgery and, to a lesser degree, on the histological form of cancer. In major fractionation, patients were operated on 1-4 days following exposure to 2000 rads, and sclerotic alterations had no time to develop. Dystrophic changes in tumor cells, not infrequently in combination with necrosis, were noted in more than half the cases. They manifested themselves in enlarged nuclear dimensions, polymorphism, vacuolization, swelling or pyknosis. No reliable differences in intensity and extent of the changes referred to above in connection with the time of surgery were stated.
