Radio isotope binding capacity of serum folic acid vitamin b 12 and ferritin radio isotope binding capacity in hematologic and rheumatologic patients

In addition to the usual parameters for [human] hematologic and rheumatologic diseases, folic acid, vitamin B12 and ferritin levels were investigated by radioisotope studies. [Patients studied included a group with hematological diseases such as iron deficiency anemia, hypoferremia, hemochromatosis, sideroblastic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, .beta.-thalassemia minor and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency; a group of rheumatoid arthritis patients; a group of ankylosing spondylitis patients; a group of patients with a variety of non-hematologic and non-rheumatologic diseases, and controls]. In some groups, folic acid was lower compared to controls, and it is possible that the disease causes the deficiency of folic acid absorption and distribution. The vitamin B12 level was only slightly decreased. Transferrin levels in ankylosing spondylitis patients were similar to those of controls; transferrin levels were increased in rheumatoid arthritis and in mixed groups of patients with various diseases. Deficiency of folic acid absorption can be assumed to be caused by the symptoms of the diseases. The group of patients with inflammatory diseases and the mixed group had increased levels of transferrin.
