Raised stomatal clusters on coleus blumei lamiaceae stems

Raised stomatal clusters on coleus blumei lamiaceae stems

Stomata on stem internodes of C. blumei occur only in cluster on hollow epidermal bulges. They were illustrated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Some stomatal clusters are sites for lenticel formation on older internodes. Three Plectranthus spp. [P. nummalaris, P. oertendahlii and P. tomentosus] were examined; 2 had discrete stomatal clusters while the 3rd showed a more scattered arrangement of stomata, indicating that the stomatal pattern on stems may have some potential as a taxonomic character in Lamiaceae.
