Recent occurrence and geographical distribution of foot and mouth disease in the state of bahia brazil 1970 1974

, : Recent occurrence and geographical distribution of foot and mouth disease in the state of bahia brazil 1970 1974. Boletim do Instituto Biologico da Bahia 14(1): 114-123

Investigations were performed in May 1970-Dec. 1974, to determine the incidence of hoof-and mouth disease (HMD) virus in cattle in Bahia, Brazil. Complement fixation test and virus isolation from field samples by tissue culture techniques were done. Samples (2046) of tongue, foot, udder epithelium and saliva from affected cattle were examined: 3 types of virus were found and 62.3% were positive. Type A was the most prevalent (31.1%) followed by type O (20.4%) and type C (10.8%). Although type A was the most common, in some periods alternations occurred with type O. Field sample negative in the preliminary complement fixation test became positive after tissue culture passage. The results correlate with previous findings in 1968-1970. At that time type O was the most prevalent.
