Recent use of fosfomycin in salmonella infections in pediatrics
Fosfomycin was studied in vitro and in vivo, against 53 Salmonella strains responsible for infections in children; the strains belonged to serogroups B, C, D and E. The activity of Fosfomycin in vitro was compared with other chemotherapeutics (ampicillin, cefuroxime, gentamicin, tobramycin, chloramphenicol, rifampicin, amikacin, tetracycline, cotrimoxazole) by 2 techniques. The activity of fosfomycin in vitro was very high against > 92% of Salmonella strains, a level similar to that of ampicillin, amikacin and cotrimoxazole. A satisfactory parallel was noted between the results of the 2 techniques for assessed in vitro sensitivity. Clinical efficacy was studied in a group of 8 children who shed Salmonella in stools; 5 were previously treated with other antibiotics. Fosfomycin prevented shedding in 4 cases.
