Recovery from cytogenetic damage of mouse bone marrow cells after continuous irradiation

The chromosomal aberration frequency in the hematopoietic cells of mouse bone marrow irradiated with the continuous dose rate 47.85 mGy/day up to the various total acccumluated doses and the recovery course of thse induced damages until the postirradiation day 100 were studied. The results suggest the important influence of the accumulated dose on the chromosomal aberration survival in the somatic cells. The comparison of the obtained experimental effects with some similar data of the animals irradiated with ten times higher dose rate up to the same accumulated doses indicated the total extent of the cytogenetic damage as well as its postirradiation recovery process being in dependence on the irradiation time factor, i.e. on the period when the respective dose is accumulated. Within the dose rates 478.50 and 47.85 mGy/day the decrease in the postirradiation chromosomal aberrations number was stated to be slower in case of the longer dose accumulation. The results refer to the relevance of the genetic risk of the long term irradiation with the low irradiation dose rates.
