Regulation of gln a messenger rna synthesis in klebsiella aerogenes

Wild-type and mutant strains of K. aerogenes were examined for the relative amounts of RNA hybridizing specifically to DNA from a transducing phage [.vphi.80] carrying glnAK, the structural gene for glutamine synthetase [EC 6.3.1.2]. A positive correlation between the intracellular level of glutamine synthetase and the level of glnA mRNA was shown. The glnA mRNA was not detected in strains devoid of glutamine synthetase protein. The transcription of glnA is probably not regulated simply by repression mediated through the glutamine synthetase protein; rather, autogenous control in this system may involve activation of transcription. The promotor of the glnA gene is probably located at the rha proximal end of the gene.
